About the Project
A clearer and more persuasive narrative for website readers
Why SUSTAIN Was Created
Tourism depends on healthy ecosystems, vibrant local communities and responsible resource management. Yet many vocational education systems still lack strong teaching materials, updated lesson plans and practical learning opportunities that connect tourism education with environmental sustainability. SUSTAIN was designed to close this gap.
The project helps vocational learners and educators understand that sustainable tourism is not an optional theme or a side topic. It is a professional necessity. The future tourism workforce must know how to reduce environmental impact, support local economies, value cultural heritage, use digital tools and respond to climate change in informed and practical ways.
Main Objectives
- Improve the quality and relevance of vocational education in sustainable tourism
- Increase students’ awareness of green skills, climate literacy and responsible tourism practices
- Support teachers in integrating climate change adaptation and sustainability into tourism lessons
- Encourage innovative learning approaches, including digital tools, virtual learning and field-based experience
- Strengthen the international capacity of partner institutions and their long-term cooperation
Who the Project Serves
The direct target groups are vocational teachers, school leaders, students and organisations linked to tourism and the environment. The project also reaches local communities, municipalities, NGOs, tourism businesses, educational networks and other institutions interested in sustainable tourism practices and labour-market-oriented vocational education.
European Relevance
SUSTAIN supports wider European priorities by connecting vocational education with climate action, responsible consumption, digital transformation and inclusion. It contributes to a greener tourism model while also helping students and teachers respond to changing labour market expectations with confidence, creativity and practical skills.
The Added Value
What makes SUSTAIN stronger is its combination of classroom learning, field observation, digital experimentation, local culture, gastronomy and international exchange. This creates learning that is visible, transferable and rooted in real-life tourism practice.
